DIY Mother's Day Card

We're exactly a week out from Mother's Day! Albeit this is cutting it kind of close, but I still thought it would be fun to share a Mother's Day card idea with you. Hope you enjoy !

What You'll Need:

  • 8.5 x 11 card stock (color of choice)

  • additional card stock (for drawing flowers onto - scraps work well, but can be any size)

  • scissors

  • ruler

  • pencil

  • thin marker or pen (to draw the flowers)

  • glue stick, double sided tape, or liquid glue *double sided tape seems to be the least messy + no need to wait for the glue to dry

  • markers or colored pencils (to color in flowers - you can skip this if you draw the flowers onto colored card stock!)

I figured this tutorial would be the easiest to follow along with and understand in video format, so here ya go! I've also included written instructions down below, plus links to the items I used! But, you really just need a few basic supplies to make this card - nothing fancy.

Instructions:

Start by folding your 8.5 x 11 sheet of card stock in half (hamburger style) to create the card. This card is horizontal - I think it fits and looks the best this way - but you could potentially make it vertical and have "mom" laid out like this:

M

O

M

....instead of MOM horizontally. It's up to you !

  1. Using your ruler, sketch out bubble or block letters to spell out "mom". Alternatively, you can print and/or trace from images/fonts you find online. But this doesn't have to look perfect since we're going to cover the letters in flowers.

* I don't have exact measurements here, as the letters can be bigger/smaller depending on your preference. For reference, my letters were about 6 cm in height.

2. Once you've drawn 2 M's and an O, go ahead and cut them out. Again, doesn't have to be perfect. Gently fold the O and cut a slit into the center. Then, carefully stab your scissor in and cut the center circle out. Be careful not to cut too large of a circle in the center so that you have enough surface area on the O for your flowers.

3. On you scrap pieces of paper, draw the flowers. You can draw a variety of different types, or just one kind - which is what I did. I also recommend drawing them in varying sizes - some bigger, some smaller. I went with a simple flower that I knew I could draw quickly - a single M used about 17-20 flowers for me.

4. If you'd like, you may color in the flowers. I recommend coloring "messily", outside the lines and all, with your colored pencils or wide-tipped marker. No need to color neatly, as you'll cut the flowers out in the next step !

5. Carefully cut out each flower - it is a time consuming step, but it'll be worth it! I recommend using a sharp pair of scissors. I found it easiest to leave my blades open, staying in the same position the whole time, while slowly rotating the petals against the blade to get a clean cut.

tip: do a "bubble cut" around each flower by roughly cutting out each one so that they're not all attached to the same sheet of paper...almost like you would for a temporary tattoo. This makes them easier to cut individually.

6. Once all of your flowers are cut out, arrange the letters and stick them onto the cover of the card with adhesive of choice - glue stick, liquid glue, or double sided tape. If using liquid glue, press it down firmly and wait for the glue to dry completely.

7. Using your thumb and pointer fingers, gently pinch the petals of the flower inward so that the petals "pop", creating a slight 3D effect. Spread thin layer of glue or stick double sided tape onto the letter and arrange puffed out flowers on top.

* I found it easiest to stick the tape onto the letter I was working on, then stick the flower on top. You could also apply the adhesive onto the flower and stick it on that way (which may work better for liquid glues).

* This sounds far more complicated in writing, so please refer to the end of the video where I showed this step at a slower pace!

8. Repeat the last step until you've covered the letters and arranged the flowers to your liking. I did have to draw and cut out more flowers towards the end.

There you have it! Now you can marvel at your beautiful work and fill in the inside of the card :)

P.S. this card was inspired by this one and this one from Papyrus

That's all I have for today, hope you enjoyed this little tutorial! And of course, Happy Mother's Day to all of the amazing moms and mother figures out there <3
